The ISSA (International Sailing Schools Association) SAIL Inshore Skipper Course is an advanced training program designed for those who wish to acquire the skills necessary to skipper sailing vessels in coastal waters. The certification awarded by ISSA is internationally recognized, enabling sailors to operate vessels in a wide variety of destinations.

This course is ideal for sailors who already have a basic knowledge of navigation and sailing and are looking to refine their skills to operate safely in coastal conditions, often up to 20 miles offshore.


Contents of the SAIL Inshore Skipper ISSA Course


1. Coastal Navigation Theory

  • Reading and use of nautical charts, including symbology and projections.
  • Calculation of bearings, both for estimated navigation and for coastal navigation.
  • Sailing in different wind conditions and with different sail trimming techniques.
  • Use of navigation instruments such as compasses, GPS, and other electronic devices.


2. Maritime Meteorology

  • Interpretation of weather maps and maritime forecasts.
  • Effects of weather on navigation and sail adjustments in changing conditions.
  • Recognition of coastal weather patterns and navigation planning based on the forecast.
  • Influence of currents, tides and coastal winds on the route.


3. Handling and Maneuvering the Sailing Vessel

  • Advanced maneuvers, such as tacks, jibes, and adjustments based on wind and waves.
  • Control of the stability and balance of the vessel.
  • Vessel governance in emergency situations.
  • Docking and undocking techniques in different types of ports and conditions.


4. Safety at Sea

  • Management and use of safety equipment on board (life jackets, flares, lifeboats).
  • Emergency and communication protocols in case of accident or rescue.
  • "Man overboard" procedures and maneuvers for safe recovery.
  • Route planning with shelter points in case of adverse weather conditions.


5. Planning and Execution of a Coastal Navigation

  • Route planning and estimation of travel times and resource consumption.
  • Preparation for anchoring in coastal waters and assessment of anchor safety.
  • Evaluation and selection of ports of refuge.
  • Day and night navigation in coastal areas, including the use of navigation lights and beacons.


6. Maritime Regulations and Standards (COLREG)

  • Knowledge of international navigation rules to avoid collisions.
  • Identification and understanding of maritime signals and beacons.
  • Rights and duties of skippers and navigators according to IS regulations
